Day 46 – Yarn Over

I bet you’re confused right?

A ‘yarn over’ is the term for a certain type of stitch in Crochet!

One of the things I wanted to be able to do during this Sabbatical was to learn a new hobby. Something that I could do that would still be productive, but help me to relax at the same time.

I researched all sorts of things and crocheting looked so cool. I have a couple of tops that are crocheted and I’ve always wanted to have some made just the way I like them. Solution – make them myself.

So, today I finally picked up the crochet hook and yarn that I’d bought back home, searched for ‘how to crochet’ on Youtube and watched the instructional videos.

This was my first attempt. It was supposed to be a square, but I don’t think I quite ‘got’ the last stitch concept until I realised that it was turning into more of a triangle than a square :-). I then tried to pick up the last stitch of the row and managed a semblance of a square on the top.

Scientific test tube?

Then I went back and re-watched the video, pausing it at every step of the part I wasn’t getting right and then I made this one.

The next try

Look at how intricate and beautiful the symmetry is

…and all they are is just a series of knots in some string. SO cool!

So, with just these tools, I’ve found a new hobby that enables me to sit and create something while giving my mind a bit of rest from achieving. 🙂

Crochet hooks, yarn and a piece of work using the ‘yarn over’ stitch.

Question of the Day

What hobby can you take up, or continue, that can help you relax?
