Day 28 – A mystery wrapped in an enigma…

Frans and I have been looking at this picture and we’ve spotted a discrepancy that’s driving us a little nuts. Can you see it?

The second mystery is the one of ‘Frans’ shiny leg’. Whenever he tans, his skin becomes really shiny (as demonstrated by this photo taken at an angle from his knee downwards)

Day 27 – Brave, a lovely movie

We’ve been warned since the weekend that fire alarm testing would be taking place in our building today and tomorrow. We got an announcement over the building PA system, that everything would be kicking off at 9am.

Well, what they promised, sure was what happened. The alarm was REALLY loud and would give 3 blasts, then there would be an announcement along the lines of “The fire alarm in this building has been activated. Please cease what you’re doing and proceed to the emergency exits…” then another 3 blasts. There are 200 flats in this building and every one of their alarms had to be tested!

So, we decided we’d leave the building and let them get on with it.

We went to Treasure Coast Mall and decided to watch the new Disney Pixar movie ‘Brave’. It’s really been advertised a lot over here and so we thought it would be nice to see.

We weren’t disappointed. It’s a lovely story illustrating the power of forgiveness and realising how much you love those that are special in your life. I’d highly recommend it.

Day 26 – Gettin’ Crabby

We decided to walk along the beach at night so that we could see the nightlife 🙂 We took this little video of a sand crab scurrying away from us when we got too close.

According to Wikipedia:

They breathe through gills, which they periodically wet with seawater.[2] They must also return to the ocean to release their eggs, which develop into marine larvae.

Adult ghost crabs dig deep burrows, comprising a long shaft with a chamber at the end, occasionally with a second entrance shaft. They remain in the burrow during the hottest part of the day, and throughout the coldest part of the winter.

Fascinating little guys

Day 25 – Here comes Debby!

Isn’t the weather a funny thing? It seems that everywhere is experiencing different weather to what they’re supposed to be having at this time of year.

The tropical storm season started early this year and we’re already on our 4th storm of the season. Her name is ‘Debby’ and this is what she looked like yesterday. We’re right under the orange bit on the East Coast.

We walked along the beach and were literally sandblasted as the wind picked up the seasand and hurtled it along the beach. We didn’t know wether to laugh at the absurdity of what we were doing or cry from the pain we were feeling.

As you can imagine, the clouds are big and black and full of rain. Frans couldn’t resist taking this little bit of video.

The amazing thing is that the vide is 2 seconds long, but when you look at the images below it you can see all that I pulled out of those 2 seconds, by viewing it frame by frame. Just amazing!

The initial lightning flash

The entire sky going white with electricity (look at the cloud definition)

The next lightning flash (can you see the man’s face? His eyebrows are on the left of the top of the flash)

The final spectacle

Simply stunning!

Question of the day

How often do you pause to see the amazing beauty of nature around you?

Day 24 – ‘Happiness’ – such a wonderful concept

Isn’t ‘Happiness’ such a wonderful word? You just can’t help but get all warm and fuzzy inside when you hear it.

Today we came across two very different place that use the word to excellent effect.

Firstly, we drove past a place called ‘Happiness Animal Hospital’. Isn’t that the coolest name for a Vet? I would take my beloved little cat and dogs there just because of the name!

It was around lunchtime so we decided to look for a place to have some lunch, and we saw a Golden Corrall Buffet and grill restaurant. We’d seen the adverts on TV and se we decided to try it out.

Oh my word!

The meal costs $10.99 (about £8) and you can literally eat as much as you like. You start on your left and there are 3 counters full of all types of salad, salad dressings, cheese, salad toppings. Then you go onto the Oriental section where there’s a selection of all sorts of dishes. Then it’s the hot meat section (ribs, steak, pulled pork, chicken and ham 🙂 and all sorts of veggies, gravy and sauces. After that you can choose from a  selection of breads and then you come to…

THE DESSERTS!

Apple & cinnamon pie, banana crumble, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate brownies, chocolate cake, carrot cake, instant dessert whip, ice cream machine and candy floss maker! etc etc etc.
Then, the ‘Pièce de résistance ‘ – the ‘Chocolate Wonderfall’ – dip marshmallows, cake, brownies into a stream of delicious chocolate. Mmmmmmm 🙂

‘Tis a good thing we only do this every now and then!

Golden Corrall’s slogan? Help yourself to happiness 🙂

Day 22 – Diamonds under your feet

Have you read the classic book ‘Acres of Diamonds‘ written by the Russell Conwell? In it he re-tells a story he heard from an Arab guide he met whilst on his travels.

A synopsis of the book, courtesy of Wikipedia, is:

The central idea of the work is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune—the resources to achieve all good things are present in one’s own community. This theme is developed by an introductory anecdote, told to Conwell by an Arab guide, about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly that he sold his property and went off in futile search for them; the new owner of his home discovered that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. Conwell elaborates on the theme through examples of success, genius, service, or other virtues involving ordinary Americans contemporary to his audience: “dig in your own back-yard!”.

Frans took this beautiful photo of the beach sand

Look how beautifully it glitters in the sunlight. As I looked at this I thought about the fact that we ‘walk on our diamonds’ all the time and we don’t even notice them – just like James Allen talks about in the book.

I’ve spent the day finding out what diamonds I have in me, that I’ve been looking for everywhere else and they were right in front of me the whole time.

What gifts and talents do you have that you haven’t yet recognised, developed and given to us?

The e-book ‘Acres of Diamonds’ is now in the public domain so, if you’d like to read it, click below.
