Day 55 – The Little Things

Isn’t it funny how little things can have such a huge impact on our lives?

There are tons of little things that affect us and here is a selection of the little things that happened to us today…

Little things that make you happy

– We woke up this morning and the sun was shining which really lifted our spirits because it’s been raining for days. A little thing that brightened our day

Little things that make you laugh

– Frans went swimming in the sea and he found this old hat. It had become home to hundreds of little things who had made a whole new home out of it. As he brought it out, a gentleman walked past and said a little thing ‘I wonder what happened to the guy’ 🙂

Little things that drive you nuts

– We came back from the pool and heard a little ‘beep’. 30 seconds later we heard another one. And then another. Turns out the battery is going flat in the smoke detector but it can’t be fixed until tomorrow morning as it’s connected to the fire system in the whole building. It’s a little noise, but it’s causing big irritation

Little things that make you smile

– A piece of Key Lime Pie – the bestest, most scrumptioustest pie on earth 🙂

Little things that quench your thirst

– Watermelon – sweet, juicy and delicious

Little things that warm your heart

– There was a youngster surfing all by himself this morning. A group of boys were surfing close to him and the lone youngster kept on looking at them wistfully, just wanting to join in. He fell off his board when a particularly big wave hit and one of the other boys held his board for him until he got his footing back. Simple kindness and inclusion – just amazing.

Little things that help you

– It’s been quite humid today and the fan we got from Walmart for a mere $17 has kept us nice and cool

Watch out for the ‘little things’ that happen all around you every day. They really can make a big difference.

Day 54 – Huge creepy crawlies!

It was like I woke up and had  a sudden revelation over the weekend – Frans, we’ve got just over a week left! So, in typical Lisa fashion, I started to investigate all the places we could go and see before we left (I really feel sorry for my husband sometimes :-)).

We both absolutely love to learn, so we agreed to go to the ‘West Palm Beach Science Museum’. It’s an hour away and we realised en route that we were travelling south on the I95 and that’s the way to get to Miami airport to fly back to the UK.

We arrived at the museum and were really excited to see all that was on display!

First we went into the Aquarium and these are a few examples of what we saw

An exquisite and huge (a hand span and a half) shell. As the creature inside grows, it blocks off little sections that become air pockets.

Beautiful fans

Spiky little guys – look more like skeletons don’t they?

Then came the fishies

Nemo! (aka Clown Fish)

Commonly known as the sucker fish. It literally sucks onto the bottom of a shark and hitches a ride. See the sucker pad on top of its head?

This one is a puffer fish. They’re he ones that blow up like a balloon when they’re threatened. He was as large as a football.

Then we got to the ‘science’ bit where there were lots of examples of common scientific basics, all explained in an understandable and practical way. Like this…

Plasma globe

There were brain teasers that literally tied your brain into knots and were great fun. We even got to see a fragment of a meteor that is believed to have come from Mars. And who could resist but take some photos of the great explorers 😉

Looking to the worlds beyond 🙂

Just feelin’ silly

Next, we went through the insect section. The butterflies were beautiful…

Look at the exquisite colours

…and even though he was just a robotic exhibit, he was HUGE

…and Frans found a robot (and I lost him for a while)

The Egyptian section had real mummies encased in glass cases. This is a mummified child, so fragile that the exhibit can’t be touched and no flash photography is allowed.

There was  a show on in the Planetarium at 1, so we sat on deeply reclining chairs and watched the universe come to life on the domed roof.

Waiting for the show to begin

When we emerged back into the sunlight, we saw the typical American school bus that had brought a load of kids to come and explore the exhibits and adventures as well.

Just like in the movies

All in all, a really good outing. If there’s  Science Museum near you, I really encourage you to visit!

Day 53 – A Question of Phase

Frans & I took a walk along the beach today. The rough weather over the past few days has washed the beach beautifully clean of all the old seaweed that washed up during the last storm.

Because of this a big drift of shells has appeared. Frans is totally fascinated by the different shapes, colours and patterns on the shells and loves to take photos of them.

Once he’d finished, we decided to walk back to the condo. By this time the drift of shells was between he and I and I didn’t want to step on the shells and break them.

He turned and looked at me and said, “But you’ll be helping them become part of the beach like they’re supposed to”

It was then that I ‘got it’. How we behave in a certain situation should be determined by what the situation actually requires and not what we suppose it does.

I thought I was crushing the shells and making them ugly and thus useless. But, in fact, that phase of their life cycle was already over and now they were in the phase where they were to be broken down to become part of the sand. I was acting towards them as if they were still in the former stage and thinking what I was doing was a bad thing. Whereas, in fact, it was a good thing, completely relevant to their current stage. So, I was helping and not hindering. Doing a good thing as opposed to getting in the way.

Wow!

What an interesting perspective! I’ll be looking out for ways to apply it in what I do every day.

Is what I am doing in this current situation good and relevant to the phase that I’m in?

Day 52 – The Beach

The Beach – A fascinating, entertaining, scary, exciting and inspirational place to be.

I woke up early this morning and God invited me to come for a walk with Him. We left out of the front gates and walked alongside the road as people walked, cycled and drove to get their early morning exercise and fetch the Sunday papers.

We walked all the way to the first beach access and out along the lifeguard jetty. Ever the information gatherer, I took these two photos. The information on these boards has probably saved countless lives.

As I walked, I got this revelation

…and this insight

Once I’d come back home and settled in, looking after Frans as he fights off a cold, we suddenly heard a real rush of noise from outside. This is what happened…

So, all in all, the beach is a fascinating, entertaining, scary, exciting and inspirational place to be!

Another ‘Florida Essential’

The plastic bag stops the sand from getting into your camera when the sea sneaks up behind you when you’re trying to take a photo and whacks you over the head with a huge wave 🙂

Day 51 – A first hand account

If you’ve been watching the news then you’ve heard of the shooting that happened a couple of days ago in the movie theatre in Colorado.

This lady was actually there and has blogged about it. What an experience!
